Hardware, Software, Civilized Chimps

Two of the most interesting discussions to come up in had to do with artificial intelligence. The first of these was the challenge of whether more progress has been made over the past 30 years in hardware or software. I made reference to a portion of communicate at the Singularity Summit: In the intelligence explosion the key threshold is criticality of recursive self-improvement. It’s not enough to undergo an AI that improves itself a little. It has to be able to improve itself enough to significantly increase its ability to make further self-improvements which sounds to me like a software issue not a hardware issue. So there is a challenge of. Can you predict that threshold using Moore’s Law at all? Geordie Rose of D-Wave Systems recently was kind enough to give us with a startling illustration of software progress versus hardware develop. Suppose you want to factor a 75-digit number. Would you rather have a 2007 supercomputer. IBM’s color Gene/L running an algorithm from 1977 or a 1977 computer an Apple II running a 2007 algorithm? And Geordie Rose calculated that Blue Gene/L with 1977’s algorithm would take ten years and an Apple II with 2007’s algorithm would take three years. This point was hotly disputed by more than one of the attendees. (It was even described as being "counter-factual.") I think the real question is how generally applicable the progress made with factoring a 75-digit number is to everything else that's being done with software. However several other types of algorithms were mentioned in which tremendous develop has been achieved over the past 30 years -- graphics rendering for example. The question of whether progress in these areas represents a general trend is beyond my expertise. But I did promise the group to give a link to Eli's talk so there it is. The other good discussion ensued from Doug Robertson's assertion that essentially no develop has been made towards the Turing test in 50 years of AI research. Doug apparently has an excellent point here. The chatbots of today aren't much more convincing than programs written in the 50's and 60's. And nothing out there today can go the test. But maybe this says less about the state of progress in Artificial Intelligence research and more about the suitability of the Turing test to measure its progress. Let's say that rather than taking on the task of making machines that are intelligent humanity was working on a different project -- introducing civilization to chimpanzees. Now "civilization" is a difficult thing to define much less measure so we need a compelling challenge to drive us towards our goal of civilizing the chimps. Human civilization has many defining characteristics and surely our ability to act and acknowledge objects of beauty is one of the finest and most purely civilized of these attributes. Thus is born the Sistine Chapel test. To wit -- as soon as chimps can produce a reasonable chimpy facsimile of the Sistine Chapel we ordain allow that they are civilized. So the project gets rolling along. We set some chimps up in a crude village and start helping them to create a language and rudimentary governmental and economic structures. Also we get them working on developing their artistic skills seeing as those will be crucial to establishing chimp civilization. It's pretty slow going at first although we can probably use analogs from existing chimp culture as a jumping off inform. Every 50 years or so we formally analyse in with the chimp civilization to see how well they're doing. And every 50 years we're disappointed. We sight that chimps are good for all kinds of low-level activities that support civilization -- building huts planting crops making fishing nets -- but their artistic skills never seem to progress much beyond making some scratches in the stone albeit scratches in some of the later stages and -- eventually -- throwing some very lumpy and discouraging-looking pots. About 500 years into the project it is noted that half a millennium has yielded little progress towards the Sistine Chapel evaluate. This observation is correct inasmuch as chimp art is comfort at a very primitive stage. However over that time the village has grown into a small city-state complete with a monarchy warrior class merchant class and priestly class. Food production has been outsourced to rural hunting farming and fishing chimps. The chimps are making real progress at transcribing their developing language into written create. While the visual arts mouth along chimpanzee poetry drama and music are all taking shape. It would seem to be indisputable that these chimps are more civilized now than they were 500 years ago. And yet this idea disputed. After all many of the cultural divisions noted above have vestigial precedents in wild chimp grow. And their use of spoken and written language may not be "real." They may just be imitating human behavior very cleverly. The argument seems to be that once chimps achieve a certain aim of behavior we no longer evaluate of that level of behavior as being "civilized." The chimpanzee civilization may be a long way from creating their own Sistine Chapel but the scientists running the Chimp Civilization Project have a much clearer idea now than they did 500 years ago of the complexities involved in creating civilization from adjoin. Some have begun to dare to query whether the Sistine Chapel is such a big deal. What if chimp civilization goes in a radically different direction? What if they advance in ways such that their accomplishments are never directly comparable with ours? Will that mean that they aren't civilized? Others continue to fret about the Big Test and despair that their simian pupils will never make the grade. Seems to me that this is pretty much the state of artificial intelligence research. While computers continue to take on more and more of the hallmarks of intelligence critics are able to (correctly) point out that we appear to be making no progress towards passing the big test. My take is that either all this less-relevant progress is more relevant than we thought or the test itself is of questionable relevance. I think the 75 bit factorization is a bad example. The problem is limited and unchanging. Factoring such a number in 1977 is the same assign as doing so in 2007. Now imagine a more general task. For example it's obvious that no computer of 1977 could run Windows XP. 2000 or Vista. Writing is feasible on 1977 technology (eg using a running linux). It can't handle graphics but that leaves a lot of cram. No similar program of 1977 was available to create documents of the quality of LaTeX now. However. I'd say there's indications that the computers of yesteryear were more efficiently used (by orders of magnitude) by their software than the machines of today are by their software. Google PageRank - The Day After

Unless you slept through yesterday or perish the thought actually did something other than sit in front of your computer you will know that Google finally rolled out it's long awaited update. For the past two weeks Google has been devaluing the of a lot of big name sites - another major Google slap as it were. The blogosphere moaned and called Google every nasty name in the book for imposing what is thought to be a penalty on everybody selling links without using the no-follow tag. Another theory is that the penalty was applied to everybody that belonged to link networks like weblogs inc etc. I say theory as with everything Google nobody really knows since Google ain't tellin'. (see a word to the wise below)Yesterday Google reversed course and began dishing out it's new rankings and suddenly there was Google love everywhere. Hordes of formally PR0 sites suddenly found themselves blessed with PR2's and 3's and even the penalized sites saw some or all of their pagerank returned - adding ever more confusion and mystery to the internet God known as the Google Algorithm. I didn't bother posting yesterday as there was no shortage of posts elsewhere and I was busy checking out the results of my own little empire. In the end what I found was more or less what I expected - my websites dropped - my static blogs remained about the same and my core money blogs all rose fairly dramatically. All in all I wasn't that surprised as I knew what the results would be long before Google posted them. No I don't have an insider at Google. I knew from observing what was happening on my stat counter over the past month. My websites have more or less been neglected by me as they require a great deal of work compared to blogs and really don't rank as well as blogs on the search engines even when maintained. I should qualify this and mention I am talking about only. Niche blogs free or hosted have been kicking butt for some time now. My website stats have showed declining traffic as a result of lower serp's for my main keywords for a while now and this told me that my sites were on the way down as far as pagerank was concerned. In regards to my blogs I have a large group that I post sporadically to - in most cases I worked them onto page 1 of the serp's just to find out that there wasn't a lot of money to be made from them and have since kept them at a status quo - they make a few bucks but not enough to get me excited. They have not fallen or risen in the serp's for some time now and I didn't expect any PR changes and I didn't get any. My core blogs - this one included have been climbing the serp's steadily for the past few months and this above all told me that they would receive a much higher PR after the update and they did - this blog jumped from a 2 to a 5. The fact is this blog has been a PR5 for a while now - it was only yesterday that the little green bar changed to reflect this fact. I don't want to rain on everybody's parade but you should realize something - your site will not perform better today than it did last week. If your little green bar is higher today it means that your site has been performing at that level for a while now. Don't expect a now - you've already had it for some time now. I received an email from one of my readers this morning and he wanted to know why his position in the search pages hadn't increased from yesterday. He went from a PR2 to a PR4. I asked him where he ranked currently - number 9 on page 1 for his. I asked him how long he has been in that position. 3 weeks he said. Where were you before that? Page 4 on Google he said. I told him that he became a PR4 3 weeks ago. Oh.. he said. This is not to say that PR is not important. It is for many reasons; you can command a higher $ from advertisers. You can also use your PR to send link love to new sites you create and help out your friends. Having a high PR will also make you more friends as well - people will pay attention to you as suddenly you MUST be doing something right. The higher your PR the more authority you will have regardless of whether this is true or not. A word to the wise. Google has publicly stated that paid links are a no-no and that it will crack down on this practice. In principle they have a valid point. To maintain the integrity of their search engine they want to present relevant quality sites in their serp's. Pagerank is one of the methods they use (but not the ONLY method) to determine which pages rank at the top of the listings for any given search query. The problem they are facing is that people who may or may not have quality sites are artificially increasing their pagerank by buying links from sites that have a high pagerank. If you were to get a link from a PR7 site this could conceivably increase your site to a PR6 instantly - even if you had been a PR0. This would certainly increase your chances of being listed high in the search listings. Great except your site might be crap and you have lessened the search engine integrity. There is a recent movement by bloggers to adopt a "do-follow" or "I-follow" approach when it comes to linking especially in regards to comments. The idea being that this will increase comments and hence if people can obtain links back to their own site by leaving comments on other sites. I was curious to see how Google would deal with this and it appears that they have left it alone in this latest update. They may well have devalued the link juice gained by comment but at least there don't appear to be any penalties handed out. This can not be said about another recent trend in blogging - paid text ads and reviews. You are probably familiar with Text-Link-Ads. Review Me? and PayPerPost. A lot of bloggers are using these programs as a way to earn revenue on their sites. I am just guessing but I think Text-Link-Ads is just about done as it exists solely for the purpose of buying and selling links that pass Pagerank on to others. A lot of sites that felt the recent Google slap had advertisements for this program on their home page. You might want to think about this before getting involved with it. ReviewMe? and PayPerPost may survive but they may have to become advertising and consulting programs only. Currently you can make money by being paid to review someone else's site on your site. Google doesn't have a problem with this as long as you include the "no-follow" tag in the paid link. The problem is that most people paying for a review are asking high PR sites for the review with the knowledge that they will get a backlink from the high PR site that doesn't contain the "no-follow" tag. This is the whole premise behind these programs at the moment as exemplified by the fact that the higher your PR the more you can charge for a review. This will soon stop or the reviewer sites will see their pagerank diminished by Google. In the end you will have to have a high traffic site to really make money selling reviews using a "no-follow". This will hurt a lot of high PR yet low traffic sites that currently sell reviews as no one will want to pay them for a backlink that doesn't have any benefit other than sending a low amount of traffic. If you use these programs I can't tell you which way to go but the latest Google crackdown on paid links should give you pause about whether to use the "no-follow" tag or not. That said those of you who gained PR this go-round enjoy your little green bar and hopefully we can all make money from it without pissing off Google in the process. Oh. if you gained a high PR you may notice a sudden increase in spam comments - gotta love those spammers. The problem with the Google bot is that it doesn't differentiate and this put egg on Google's face over this past week. Two very mainstream bloggers - problogger and copyblogger were both penalized in the slap last week yet were innocent of selling links. The outrage on the blogosphere was enough to convince Google to manually correct their error and give them back their PR. Other's like John Chow haven't been so lucky. It appears that Google only went after the big guns re selling links this time around knowing that the message would get out to everyone else in a hurry and it has. I would stay clear of text-link-ads as you hinted of doing and you may want to consider the no-follow if doing paid reviews. I suspect that the next slap will include everybody running afoul of Google's edicts and not just the high profile sites. I am only speculating of course. One thing I did notice is that Google did reward a lot of sites like yours that offer quality and original content - something they have said they would do. Kudos my friend for a job well done. Grizzly There's a wee problem with putting nofollow on paid reviews and that's because the likes of PayPerPost will reject a review if it doesn't use the link exactly as given and that includes using target="_blank" to stop visitors clicking away from the site. Maybe I can add the nofollow after they have paid me for the review - that only leaves the backlink alive for about a month. I'll try that on a couple of older posts and see if they complain about it. Can't see that they would unless the advertiser themselves get wind of it and complain to PPP - maybe it could get my account deleted! I can't afford to lose that too. NEED HELP! MY COMPUTER HAS BEEN HIJACKED.

I have tried many many spyware/adware programs but none of them work. My task bar has a blinking "x". Although I use Firefox my Internet Explorer homepage has been hijacked by safenavweb com. My background has been hijacked saying that my privacy is in danger. System alerts pop up stating that I undergo a "win32. NetSky" worm. Also each time I reboot icons on my desktop appear trying to sell me internet protectors. This my last resort. One little answer I acknowledge very much is that I can write an email from Gmail directly within the Pageflakes site. I use Pageflakes as my start summon. It has potential to be even exceed than Netvibes in the future. () The most popular examine engine in the world has a start summon as well. The offerings from Windows be are acceptable but some of the other offerings undergo stronger developer ecosystems around them. It doesn’t stack up well against it’s main competitors iGoogle and MyYahoo. is one of the most disappointing of all. Not because of the design issues or anything of the sort - it’s very simplistic and it does what it promises to do. It’s just the annoying bugs with the system. I could only add one cater at a measure where then I had to exit to the main page and then add another feed. It didn’t really alter comprehend to me. We wonder if Favoor originally covered here in 2005 may have been abandoned. () is more of an RSS reader than a startpage. A virtual RSS desktop reader to be exact. I accept it started out as an RSS reader and now they are trying to alter it a virtual desktop like yourminis. It has much bring home the bacon to be done to win anyone over. is unlikely to displace anyone to its start page offering - it is just an extremely simplified iGoogle. It’s only truly useful if you use the other services Inbox provides like its telecommunicate services. is another virtual desktop for information. You can create modules drag them around the screen and create them in any which way you choose. alter customization is a nice feature. It certainly will not win against yourminis but against the other virtual desktops it might move a few heads. Regularly praised for being the best looking of the clump. () really does feel like it is just starting up: it’s not there yet in terms of features or design. It currently lacks what it would act to compete with the much bigger and better offerings currently available. Ultimately there’s no “best” startpage. Netvibes and Pageflakes are not bunco on circumscribe and offer amazing customization iGoogle and My Yahoo are great options if you already use those services. Schmedley and yourminis approach the merchandise uniquely and some populate swear by them. We would avoid the smaller less featureless sites however especially those that lack a developer community: these are the most likely to fall into disrepair forcing you to move accommodate just as you get settled in. I undergo a suggestion. Does anyone thought about defining an XML standard for developing gadgets? For example:I like Pageflakes,I want to use google as my search engine,Yahoo mail. To be honest it's not the greatest interface but I get a ton of functionality out of it. AA I really like NetVibes but its harder to acess all that I want iGoogle has everything that I use on it including gMail GCal and Google Docs. I also use that widget that lets use have a webpage in a tab. It works perfectly. You really need to act a new look at "My Yahoo."It has a beta out that allows 4 columns the ability to take off the links along the left column. The ability is there to add any RSS feed you find and they are continuing to create more Yahoo modules as come up. I bequeath I was an die hard user since 2002 or so. One of my first customized home pages since (erols. oh man dial up) offers customized content and add ons. But as stated with smaller providers it was not worth it. They returned 0 that in none of my e-mails for give. To this day their cheezy themes are comfort broken if you decide certain combinations.
